Critical Care Information System
The Critical Care Information System (CCIS) is a key component of Ontario’s Critical Care Strategy which is overseen by Critical Care Services Ontario (CCSO). The CCIS provides near-real time data on every patient admitted to level 3 and level 2 critical care units in Ontario’s acute care hospitals. The system also provides information on bed availability, critical care service utilization and patient outcomes through the ‘Reports’ functionality. The system provides an important medium for monitoring and managing the province’s critical care resources more effectively, and for highlighting opportunities to implement quality improvement initiatives at individual hospitals and across the LHINs.
The CCIS Bed Availability Tool (BAT) automatically transfers critical care bed information to CritiCall Ontario’s PHRS critical care resource screens. This information is used in real time by CritiCall Ontario agents to help make informed decisions about placement of patients when hospitals experience a capacity issue (e.g. Moderate surge, Natural Disasters, Pandemic, major events, etc.), or patients need a higher level of care (e.g. ‘Life or Limb’).
CritiCall Ontario operates the CCIS on behalf of Hamilton Health Sciences, which is the "Prescribed Person” under the Personal Health Information Protection Act, in relation to the CCIS. CritiCall Ontario also works closely with CCSO to ensure the CCIS continues to fulfill its function as a key component of the provincial critical care strategy.
Hospitals are responsible for making sure that accountabilities related to the CCIS are met. For more information about the purpose, scope, background and accountabilities, please refer to the CCIS Accountability Statement.
Access to the CCIS is granted to hospital-based users who have been authorized by their hospital to use the CCIS for in the performance of their job-related duties. Please refer to the CCIS Registration Guide for more information. The related registration forms are available in Our Resources
You can print and post a CCIS Support Poster for your unit or access additional information, including CCIS training and support by contacting the CCIS Training Team at firstname.lastname@example.org.
