Critical Care Information System<\/h1>\n

The Critical Care Information System (CCIS) is a key component of Ontario\u2019s Critical Care Strategy which is overseen by Critical Care Services Ontario (CCSO)<\/a>. The CCIS provides near-real time data on every patient admitted to level 3 and level 2 critical care units in Ontario\u2019s acute care hospitals and consultation data for funded Critical Care Response Teams. The system also provides information on bed availability, critical care service utilization and patient outcomes through the \u2018Reports\u2019 functionality. The system provides an important medium for monitoring and managing the province\u2019s critical care resources more effectively, and for highlighting opportunities to implement quality improvement initiatives at individual hospitals and across regions.<\/p>\n

The CCIS Bed Availability Tool (BAT) automatically transfers critical care bed information to CritiCall Ontario\u2019s PHRS<\/a> critical care resource screens. This information is used in real time by CritiCall Ontario agents and Provincial partners to help make informed decisions about placement of patients when hospitals experience a capacity issue (e.g. Moderate surge, Natural Disasters, Pandemic, major events, etc.), or patients need a higher level of care (e.g. \u2018Life or Limb\u2019).<\/p>\n

CritiCall Ontario operates the CCIS on behalf of Ornge<\/a>, which is the “Prescribed Person<\/a>\u201d under the Personal Health Information Protection Act, in relation to the CCIS. CritiCall Ontario also works closely with CCSO to ensure the CCIS continues to fulfill its function as a key component of the provincial critical care strategy.<\/p>\n

Hospitals are responsible for making sure that accountabilities related to the CCIS are met. For more information about the purpose, scope, background and accountabilities, please refer to the CCIS Accountability Statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Access to the CCIS is granted to hospital-based users who have been authorized by their hospital to use the CCIS for the performance of their job-related duties.
